This story began as an English assignment when I was fourteen years old.

What started as a school project stayed with me quietly over the years. A full draft was completed long before this book ever found its way into print, but the story never truly left. It waited, as some stories do, for the right time to be finished.

Life continued in the meantime.

Along the way, I had the privilege of witnessing extraordinary courage in a child and in his family. That experience did not create this story, but it reminded me why stories like this matter. Courage, love, and persistence are not abstract ideas. They are lived every day, often quietly, by people who never expect recognition.

This book is offered with gratitude—for imagination, for nature, and for the people who stand up when something precious needs protecting.

Thank you for reading.
